Have you seen a whale, dolphin, porpoise or sea turtle in B.C. recently? Are you gearing up for your summer season on the water?

Just in time for the summer boating season, we’re proud to unveil our new online webform.

This new interactive method of reporting sightings has many great new features, including a clickable Google map to easily find and enter your location, and help with species identification for all species of whales, dolphins, porpoise and sea turtles that might be found in British Columbia waters. In addition, once you’ve registered as a Sightings Network observer and entered some sightings, you’ll find a personal summary of your sightings in your My Sightings page.

Many species of whales, dolphins, porpoise and sea turtles in British Columbia’s waters are listed as At Risk under the Species At Risk Act (SARA). Your sightings are important for our efforts to understand the distribution and abundance patterns of marine mammals in B.C., and whether these populations are increasing, stable or declining. The information is used to study habitat use, establish Marine Protected Areas, and mitigate threats such as underwater noise and industrial development.

Please check out the new webform, and tell us how you like it!
